Disorders of prostate include enlargement, inflammation, infection and cancer. Benign prostatic hyperplasia typically begins after the age of 40. Half of males above 50 & over age are affected with hypertophy of prostate.
1- Prostatitis:- It is an inflammation of the prostate gland. It can be caused by infection with bacteria or other non infective causes. Inflammation of prostate can cause pain during urination, or ejaculation, groin pain, difficulty passing urine, inflammatory fever. When inflammation happens in prostate it becomes enlarged.
2- Enlarged Prostate:- An enlarged prostate is called prostatomegaly with benign prostatic hyperplasia being the most common cause. Benign prostatic hyperplasia refers to an enlargement of prostate due to an increase in the no. of cells that make up the prostate. It is very common in older men. It is often diagnosed when the prostate has enlarged to the point where urination becomes difficult.
Patients with enlarged prostate needs to urinate often or there is retention in urination. If the prostate grows too large, it may constrict the urethra & impede the flow of urine making urination painful & difficult or in some severe cases completely impossible. With time chronic retention of urine may cause the bladder to become larger & cause a backflow of urine into the kidneys.
3- Prostate cancer:- It is one of the most common cancers affecting older man. Symptoms may include increased urinary frequency, urgency, & other symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. A digital rectal examination & the measurement of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level are usually the first investigations done to check for prostate cancer.
