Sciatica is a type of pain which goes down the leg from lower back. This pain of sciatica may go down the lower back or front of the leg or sides of the leg. The sciatica pain onset may be sudden or gradual following activities like heavy lifting or sitting for long hours. The pain is like shooting in character. The sciatica pain usually occurs on one side of the leg. But in few cases it can occur in both legs. Weakness & numbness may occur in various parts of the affected leg & foot.
About 85-90% of sciatica is due to spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots. Spondylolisthesis, pelvic tumours, spinal stenosis, & pregnancy are also possible causes of sciatica. Sciatica is most common between the ages of 40-60 & men are more frequently affected than women.
1- Spinal disc herniation- It is pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots is the most frequent cause of sciatica, being present in about 90% of cases. Disc herniation most often occurs during heavy lifting. Pain increases when bending forward or sitting & reduces when lying down or walking.
2- Spinal stenosis:- Lumbar spinal stenosis, a condition in which the spinal canal, the space the spinal cord runs through, narrows, & compresses the spinal cord, cauda equina or sciatic nerve roots. This narrowing can be caused by bone spurs, spondylolisthesis, inflammation or a herniated disc which decreases available space for the spinal cord. The pain is most commonly relieved by rest.
3- Piriformis syndrome:- It is a condition in which the piriformis shortens or spasms due to trauma or overuse than thus it causes compression of the sciatic nerve
4- Pregnancy:- Sciatica may also occur during pregnancy, especially during later stages, as a result of weight of the fetus pressing on the sciatic nerve during sitting or during leg spasms.
5- Excessive of sitting in one position
6- Obesity is also a major factor in causing sciatica pain.
1- Mild to sharp to severe pain in the lower part of the body including your back, hips & buttocks.
2- Sensation of being numb or having pins & needles in the legs.
3- Burning sensation, foot numbness, limping, muscle weakness or overall lower body weakness.
4- Difficulty in moving due to pain
