More than 90% of heavy drinkers develop fatty liver while about 25% develop the more severe alcoholic hepatitis. It occurs most often in older people age group and in males.
1- The liver becomes swollen/inflamed, which damages its tissues. This stage is called steatohepatitis.
2- Scar tissues forms where your liver is damaged. This process is called fibrosis.
3- Extensive scar tissue replaces healthy tissues. At this point the disease is severe & called as cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis of the liver is a result of severe damage to the liver. The hard scar tissue that replaces healthy liver tissue slows down the liver function & as a result it can block liver function. Cirrhosis can lead to liver failure & liver cancer.
