It is an abnormal enlargement of the pampiniform venous plexus in the scrotum. This plexus work is to drain blood from the testicles back to the heart. These vessels originate in the abdomen & course down through the inguinal canal as part of the spermatic cord on their way to the testis. The incidence of varicocele increases with the age.
Varicocele causes enlargement of the veins within the loose bag of skin that holds the testicles/ scrotum. These veins transport oxygen-depleted blood from the testes. A varicocele occurs when the blood pools in the veins rather than circulating efficiently out of the scrotum.
1- Varicocele may be noticed as soft lumps, usually above the testicle & mostly on the left side of the scrotum but right sided & both side varicocele may also occur.
2- Men with varicocele can feel symptoms of pain or heaviness in their scrotum. A dull, aching pain, or discomfort is more likely when standing or late in the day.
3- Large varicoceles present itself as plexus of veins & may be described as a bag of worms. It will cause differently sized testicles.
4- Varicocele may lead to infertility in males.
1- It is caused by defective valves in the veins within the scrotum, just above the testicles. Normally, these valves regulate the flow of blood to & from the testicles. When this normal flow doesn’t occur, the blood backs up, causing the veins to dilate.
2- The veins on the left side connects to the larger outflowing vein at a right angle, which tends to fail & causes dilatation in left side of scrotum.
3- Due to excessive pressure in upstream arteries caused by the compression of left renal vein between the abdominal aorta & superior mesenteric artery also called as nutcracker syndrome.
